The recipient is Unteroffizier (NCO) Karl Mitter, a group leader. During a partisan attack on his position, hill 1310 south of Jele, on June 11, 1943, Mitter managed to defend the position with his group under heavy mortar, machine gun, and rifle fire until the battalion commander gave the order to retreat.
